[摘要] From 17-20 March 2025, the National Library of Greece hosted 120 participants from 24 countries who took part in the “Metadata Standards Matter: Building a Sustainable Future for Information” symposium and mid-year meetings of the Advisory Committee on Standards, the IFLA metadata sections (Cataloguing, Bibliography and Subject Analysis & Access sections), the Review Groups, and the Accessibility Metadata Network, organised by the IFLA Advisory Committee on Standards. The goal was to gather metadata specialists from all over the world to discuss and share experiences, practices, problems and solutions regarding metadata standards.
From 17-20 March 2025,the National Library of Greece hosted 120 participants from 24 countries who took part in the“Metadata Standards Matter:Building a Sustainable Future for Information”symposium and mid-year meetings of the Advisory Committee on Standards,the IFLA metadata sections(Cataloguing,Bibliography and Subject Analysis&Access sections),the Review Groups,and the Accessibility Metadata Network,organised by the IFLA Advisory Committee on Standards.The goal was to gather metadata specialists from all over the world to discuss and share experiences,practices,problems and solutions regarding metadata standards.
Three subtopics,united under the symposium theme“Metadata Standards Matter:Building a Sustainable Future for Information”,aimed to cover current issues and problems faced by library professionals,researchers,and academics who deal with the very complex and broad field of metadata and standards.
The opening subtopic,titled“Accessibility Matters”,started with a panel discussion with members of the Accessibility Metadata Network,formed after the IFLA Congress in Rotterdam in 2023.Panellists presented the concept of accessibility,the work of the Network and the ways in which it will function.The panel was followed by two presentations on the accessibility of Indigenous collections in Canada and the challenges and opportunities arising from changes in metadata and the ways OCLC is resolving them.
The second subtopic,titled“Technology Matters”,aimed to cover key aspects of the ongoing changes in the field of metadata development.Due to the large number of papers received,the Symposium Organizing Committee decided to double the number of papers and include ten presentations in the Symposium programme,instead of the planned five.Presentations were split into two different sessions.During the initial session,presentations focused on linked data and metadata sharing were delivered.Examples of projects,practices and research from the National Library of Greece,the UDC Consortium,the National Library of Catalonia,and other international institutions were presented.The second session covered artificial intelligence,various tools,and metadata management.During this session,representatives from the Library of Congress,the National Library of Belgium,the German National Library,Stanford University,and the University of Chemnitz shared their experiences.
The third subtopic,“Competencies Matter”,addressed the challenges of adapting to changes in daily work,particularly new technologies.Participants from Greece,Germany,USA,and Albania shared their experiences.
On 17&18 March,the Symposium was preceded by two days of IFLA metadata committee meetings(Cataloguing Section,Subject Analysis&Access Section and Bibliography Section),an open meeting of the Accessibility Metadata Network,meetings of the working group revising the IFLA professional statement on Universal Bibliographic Control(UBC)and the Review Groups that report to CoS.These include the Bibliographic Conceptual Models(BCM)Review Group,the International Standard Bibliographic Description(ISBD)Review Group,the Metadata Technical Standards Review Group(METATEC),and the UNIMARC Committee.A Metadata Reports session on 18 March brought all ten groups together to present highlights of their work and to discuss coordination efforts.
The National Library of Greece hosted this event expertly and with generous hospitality.The facilities,technical support and colleagues from the National Library contributed significantly to the success of the Symposium and mid-year meetings.Besides the general tour of the National Library,participants were able to learn more about Digitization Services,Conservation Services and the Manuscripts Department.Colleagues from the National Library of Greece organized an RDA workshop.
Social events were also included,with participants attending a welcome reception in the National Library on Monday and experiencing traditional Greek cuisine the following day.
The Meetings and Symposium were generously sponsored by Dataly Tech,EBSCO and OCLC.
The events provided a distinctive platform for metadata specialists to exchange their experiences,projects,challenges,and potential solutions.Participants examined the complexities of metadata standards and explored innovative strategies to ensure the sustainability of information management in an increasingly dynamic digital environment.
