This article provides general information about the role of materials in the optical area including illuminating engineering. In the traditional development process, the new system is firstly developed and secondly, materials suitable for the system are studied. On the other hand, liquid crystal display, laser, and other historical innovations were achieved by focusing on essential characteristics of substances, not by requirement of systems. This article outlines current state and future possibility of functionalization of materials, focusing on photonics polymer.

Photonic crystals are materials which have the novel ability to control optical modes. In this article, we present recent results of light-emission control via the introduction of a photonic crystal into various emitters, including light-emitting diode structures which will become important in future illumination systems. It has been clearly demonstrated that the unusable portion of the light emission can be inhibited by the so-called photonic bandgap, while the emission efficiency in the direction where desired optical modes exist can be enhanced. In addition, the preliminary results of light emission from nitride-based semiconductor photonic crystals are reported.

Wavelength conversion devices are widely applied as ultraviolet-visible coherent light sources. This report provides information of the device, ranging from basic to advanced, as follows. First of all, characteristics of inorganic nonlinear optical materials used for wavelength conversion devices, and fundamental technical information such as the wavelength conversion scheme are provided. Secondly, several wavelength conversion devices utilizing those technologies are presented. Finally, the report ends by presenting recent examples of application of wavelength conversion devices to high output visible light sources and projection televisions.

We report an optical MEMS (micro electro mechanical system) scanner developed for projection-type image display. A PZT film of 4 micron thickness was deposited onto an SOI (silicon-on-insulator) wafer by an arc discharged reactive ion-plating method to compose piezoelectric unimorph actuators. Technical requirement for the optical scanner is discussed in terms of the scan angle and speed for the VGA (video graphics array) resolution. Two-dimensional scanning mirror mechanisms were designed with a fast resonant axis at 15.8kHz for the horizontal line scan of image and a slow off-resonant axis for the vertical frame refresh at 60Hz. Optical scan angles of horizontal 39 degrees and vertical 29 degrees were experimentally obtained at drive voltages upwards of 40V. A demonstration of VGA-video projection with Red, Green, Blue laser light sources is also presented.

Liquid crystal materials with self-assembly molecular alignment have light modulation for polarized light in non-emissive flat-panel displays. The liquid crystal alignment structures create various electro-optic effects. The variation and flexibility in combination of the liquid crystal device and illumination light source also enable to apply to display usages in various illumination environments. The liquid crystal is useful to next-generation display technology including flexible display.
