Structure of lighting industry has been changing by dissemination of LED lighting. Considering the future of lighting, it seems important to adopt our research results on interaction between visual mechanism, visual environment, photo-biological safety and so on for human being and lighting technologies into standards as well as in the case of light sources. The IEIJ, which consists of a lot of professionals, should catch the market trend from an early stage of the evolutional change and enhance steering functions of standardization on LED lighting to realize new lighting style, to lead lighting science and to improve presence of IEIJ in the world.

The Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan (IEIJ) will change to a general incorporated association next year. The new organization will comply with the new act on public interest corporations. Based on our new vision following changes in social needs and technical developments, IEIJ reformed its organization greatly, such as by introducing special interest group (division) systems, in order to establish new lighting science. This article describes how such reformations were achieved, and gives the outline of the new organization and expectations for the new and improved IEIJ.

Eight academic divisions were established this year. It is expected that wider members of the IEIJ could join one of these divisions and upgrade one's skills through various activities. It is also urgent for the IEIJ to strengthen the activity, global correspondence and breed next generation by combining regional chapters and academic divisions. The aim, plan and schedule of these academic divisions are briefly introduced.

After the mega-earthquake damaged East Japan seriously, Japanese people has been noticed the importance of energy-saving lighting without quality drop. Now to develop energy-saving light sources and lighting system with high quality of light environment is one of the most Important role of this light source and lighting system divison of IEIJ. Here the purpose and activity of this division is introduced. Also division meeting and division symposium those were held in the annual conference of IEIJ are reported.

According to spread advances of LEDs as a light source for illumination, the needs of the measurement technique for them have become higher and standardization has been pushed forward. The Optical metrology division supports research and development of those measurement techniques to move ahead on their technical standardizations. As an example of the activity of the division, a trend on the standardization of the LED measurement techniques is described.

Lighting Design exists within the triangle of art, science, and society. In the days head, more and more the localization of lighting design will become a primary a theme as this profession moves into the era of energy conservation. Next year, the Division of Lighting Design will kick-off of the year with such activities as Survey and Study of Lighting Environments, Lighting Design Tours, revaluation of the concept of the Lighting Design Awards, and lectures. These opportunities and other intercommunication work sessions will become the main focus for the year. With the mutual cooperation of other members, we want to make next year's committee activities appealing and enjoyable for all.

The demand for energy savings, which followed in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake makes us rethink about how we should use lighting in various aspects of the society. In such a social situation, the Environment & Energy Division plans to conduct research and promotions relating to the effective use of lighting energy. This article presents the outline of future policies for the Division, and past energy-saving-related activities conducted by the IEIJ, starting with the publication of typical energy-saving methods for building lighting (e.g., task-ambient lighting and daylight usage) in "Technical Guide for practical Lighting Design (Second Edition), March 2011."

The Division of Illumination Promotion took over the lighting promotion activities previously conducted by the Illumination Promoting Division of the IEIJ. Its main responsibilities are presenting the Lighting Promotion Award, carrying out joint events for "Akari No Hi (Day of Illumination)" and issuing of various publications such as the "New Lighting Classroom Series". In the future, in addition to coordination with branches, we want to consider activities connected with other divisions and sub-committees.
